MAC Apologizes for Rodarte Collection Controversy
Extreme controversy has been surrounding MAC’s newest collection for Rodarte, which is scheduled for release in September. Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the designers for Rodarte, say the collection was inspired by a recent trip they took to Texas and Mexico. The makeup names include “Sleepwalker,” “Bordertown” and “Ghost Town,” but it’s the nail polishes named “Juarez” and “Factory” that have motivated people to speak up.
Juarez, Mexico has been named “The World’s Deadliest City.” It is most commonly known for the abduction, murder and raping of hundreds of the young women living within the city. Many of the women are abducted while on their way to work at the local factories. Authorities estimate the female homicide toll to be around 400, while locals say the number is closer to 5,000! In the April edition of Vogue, the Mulleavy sisters talk about how they were inspired by the “pale faced women sleepwalking to work.” Unfortunately, the designer’s romanticized view is far from reality, and while these women may seem to be “floating” around the city before dawn, they are actually risking their lives everyday.
Pink crosses line the city in memory of women who have been murdered
The controversy surrounding the collection has forced MAC to issue a statement regarding this issue. They announced that they will be donating a “portion” of the proceeds to those in need in Juarez.
MAC’s Official Statement
We understand that product names in the M·A·C Rodarte collection have offended some of our consumers and fans. This was never our intent and we are very sorry. We are listening carefully to the comments posted and are grateful to those of you who have brought your concerns to the forefront of our attention. M·A·C will give a portion of the proceeds from the M·A·C Rodarte collection to help those in need in Juarez. We are diligently investigating the best way to do this. Please be assured that we will keep you posted on the details regarding our efforts.
Rodarte’s Official Statement
Our makeup collaboration with M·A·C developed from inspirations on a road trip that we took in Texas last year, from El Paso to Marfa. The ethereal nature of this landscape influenced the creative development and desert palette of the collection. We are truly saddened about injustice in Juarez and it is a very important issue to us. The M·A·C collaboration was intended as a celebration of the beauty of the landscape and people in the areas that we traveled.

CORAL
Seen all over the Spring/Summer 2010 runways, coral is definitely the “it” color for next season! The gorgeous peachy-pink has been popping up everywhere, from new makeup collections (see Bobbi Brown’s Cabana Coral Collection above), to the faces of celebrities. Check out what all the hype is about, and how you can make coral your go-to color for Spring!

At her Spring 2010 show, Diane Von Furstenberg’s models (left) wore coral eyeshadow on their lids, that extended out to their upper cheekbones. At Anna Sui’s Spring show, makeup artist Pat Mcgrath used Covergirl’s Simply Ageless Blush in Plush Peach to achieve the coral cheeks seen (on right).

Coral is a universally flattering color for any skintone, you just have find the right shade! Below is a small guide to lead you in the direction of finding the right coral for your skin.
Light
If you have lighter skin, pale toned, cooler corals will great on you! Try Vincent Longo’s Diamond Lipgloss in Coral Cabana, or YSL’s Pure Coral Lipgloss.

Medium and olive toned skin look amazing in coral!! Try and aim for more warmer, apricot toned corals to brighten you up and make you look sun-kissed and healthy. Try MAC’s Mineralize Blush in Gleeful applied to the apples of your cheeks. Or YSL’s Golden Coral Lipgloss.

Autumn/Winter 09/10 Trend: Black Lips
Rachel Roy Fall 2009
Trend Alert: Black is the New.. Black?
Black lips have been trending (thank you YSL) since last fall, and this season, they are making another comeback. From runways to celebrities, this trend does not seem to be going away as much as some wish it would haha. Don’t worry though, with a little tweaking, this trend can be totally wearable!!
Instead of opting for a straight black lip shade , try choosing darker shades of your regular colored lipsticks. Deep, dark reds and blackberry’s will look gorgeous on you this fall. Just remember, whenever you have a dramatic lip, go easy on everything else! Keep the eyes more neutral to shift the focus on your pout.
Kim Kardashian by Makeup Artist Troy Jensen
This season, even several of the cosmetic companies are jumping on the black lip bandwagon, and coming out with whole collections inspired by this vampy trend (and most likely because of the popularity of Twilight).
MAC is coming out with a line called Style Black at the end of September which will include “Black Knight,” a creamy black lipstick, “Midnight Media,” a dense matte lipstick, “Blackware,” a true black lipgloss along with several other sheer black lipglosses with pink and gold pearls.

Chanel will be releasing their “black” collection in September, and this one seems a lot more wearable. It includes three shades of deep lipsticks. “Hysteria,” an eggplant black, “Maniac,” a deep black red, and “Obscure,” a brown black. This collection looks gorgeous, check out the advertising!! So hot!
