Fall 2010 Trend Alert: Full Eyebrows

Christian Siriano F/W 2010
Just as Heidi Klum infamously quotes in every episode of Project Runway, “in fashion, one day you’re in and the next you are out!”
Last season’s extremely popular bleached eyebrow trend (here) is already (quickly) being replaced with stronger, fuller brows. During this past fashion week for Fall 2010′s collections, bleached eyebrows were almost obsolete! Designers such as Narciso Rodriguez, Christian Siriano, Yigal Arouzel and Thakoon all opted for their model’s eyebrows to be extremely full, and in some cases, exaggeratedly hairy.

At the Trias show, makeup artists drew in the eyebrows very thick, and dramatically sketched wispy hairs coming off the top of each brow. Even blonde models were given darker brows which practically leap off their face!
.
In one of MAC’s recent ads for their Mineralize Foundation, the blonde model is sporting some heavily structured brows. Just another example of what we can start to expect over the next few months.
.

Makeup artist, Dick Page, created the look for Narciso Rodriguez’s Fall 2010 runway show. The eyebrow color was custom blended with black eyeliner and a white cream to create the deep grey tone above. These brows make a statement, and are focal point of the whole look.
Trend Alert: Unibrows are Sexy!
Disclaimer: This was an April Fools Day post, but since April Fools is over, I felt it necessary to warn you before you start reading
Hairy is In!
The time has finally come to put down your tweezers and embrace the unibrow you have fought so hardly against for your whole life. The fashion world is giving us hint after hint that eyebrows should no longer be separated, by joined together as one! This is great news! Tweezing is so tedious.

Claudia Schiffer was recently photographed wearing a furry little unibrow in last month’s issue of German Vogue shot by Karl Lagerfeld. Sexy.
.

Topshop’s runway

Galliano’s Fall 2010 runway was a bold display of flawless unibrows, penciled in to perfection. Very neanderthal chic.
.

Get The Look:
Chances are you are not currently sporting a unibrow (and if you are, congrats, you little trendsetter), so follow these easy steps to fake it until you make it!
1. Choose an eyebrow pencil the same color as your eyebrows, go a little darker for extra drama.
2. Begin where your eyebrows starts and start filling in the gap!
3. Flick your pencil upward as you draw to start mimicking the hairs that should be there.
4. The hairs near your right eyebrow should be drawn in facing the right. Hairs near your left brow should be flicked toward the left. Hairs in the center should face straight up.
Our whole goal is for it to look like your actual eyebrow. It needs to look natural because seriously…how dumb would you look if your “unibrow” was an obvious fake?

Spotted: Colored Eyebrows at Balenciaga!
Paris Fashion Week A/W 2010:
Green, Blue, Orange, and Pink Eyebrows!!

It’s Fashion Week in Paris as we speak and I love, love, love what I saw on the Balenciaga runway today!! While not practical at all for everyday wear, the colored eyebrows rockin’ the runway were lovely nonetheless!
Pat McGrath was the key artist for the show. She kept the entire the face super clean, with just a touch of baby pink blush on the cheeks and a hint of pink on the lips. It was the perfect canvas for such unique brows!
The subtlety is perfect. The brows are dramatic but not over the top.
I love a pink eyebrow any day of the week!

Mystery Solved!
Katie Price’s Eyebrows
Beauty Don’t: Massively Thick, Drawn in Brows

Zimbio.com
Katie Price aka Jordan was in Los Angeles this week getting Botox, hair extensions and visiting the set of Chelsea Lately. If you’re wondering who she is, Katie is a huge personality in the UK, as a glamour model, t.v personality and entrepreneur.
With everything aside, I have to wonder… what is going on with her eyebrows??? Since she is not well known in the United States, I have not seen a picture of her in several months and this caught me way off guard. After doing a bit of research, I have discovered that this look was not a one-time occurrence. She has been sporting massively thick eyebrows to go with her darker hair color.
Obviously I love eyebrows, and I love thick ones even more but I think that Katie is taking her brows a little too seriously. They are SO dark and big that they not only make her look clownish, but are aging her quite a bit. Despite the criticisms that Katie Price receives, she is very pretty, but the heavy makeup and thick brows are not doing her ANY good.
Keep your eyebrows natural! Fill them in but don’t go too crazy or you’ll wind up looking like a clown.
Mixed Signals

Eyebrows: Bleach ‘em or Grow ‘em?
I’m confused…. hahaha. No, but I really am.
As mentioned before (here), bleached eyebrows were THE rage this season during fashion week. Tons of models in a majority of the shows were seen sporting the “no brow” look. Not the models at the Chloe Marithé + François Girbaud’s shows though! They decided to ignore that trend all together and take it in the complete opposite direction with exaggerated and bushy eyebrows!

Makeup artists at the Chloe show concentrated on bold, natural eyebrows. And by natural, I’m talking the kind of eyebrow I rocked in the fourth grade. The eyebrows are actually drawn on even more to make them look thick and unruly.

While the models at the Marithé + François Girbaud show were given exaggerated and intense brows that reached for the ceiling!
With all the bleached brow madness, it must have been a nice change for makeup artists to be able draw the brows back on!
Spring/Summer 2010 Trend: Bleached Eyebrows
Givenchy- Paris Fashion Week S/S 2010
Trend Alert: Bleached Eyebrows are In!

Bleached eyebrows (almost to the point invisibility!) started appearing earlier this summer when Adriana Lima appeared in Givenchy’s Fall/Winter ad campaign (pictured below). Since then, New York, Milan and Paris runways are ALL about the bleached eyebrow. Models walking in the shows for Lanvin, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and Viktor & Rolf among many others have been seen sporting this uniquely edgy, new trend.
.
.Since I am a huge fan of eyebrows, I’m not really loving this trend at all. Of course it works for fashion and I actually can’t wait to do a shoot with no eyebrows, but for everyday women, it’s not really practical. Of course, however, there are always ways of tweaking these looks to make them wearable and appropriate.
To Get the Look:
While completely bleached out eyebrows can make you look more like an alien than a fashionista, opting for a lighter color brow can give an overall softness to your face. Especially if your not a natural blonde! Lightening your eyebrows can make your look much more believable.
If you decide to try out this trend, have a professional do it for the first time! Working with bleach is not the easiest thing to do and it’s best left to someone who knows what they are doing!

How To: Shape The Perfect Eyebrow

Megan Fox (The hair on her head is a bit of a mess but her eyebrows are
flawlessly groomed)
Shaping The Perfect Eyebrow For Your Face
It’s no secret that I am obsessed with eyebrows. More often than not, eyebrows are overlooked. Many women really underestimate the power of amazing eyebrows. I’ve already listed my picks for the best celebrity brows and now I’ll give you the steps to making your own eyebrows red carpet worthy.
Shaping-
Creating perfect shape can definitely be the most difficult part of your perfect eyebrow quest. “Do I tweeze, wax, thread, shave?” are the first questions that always come to mind. Personally I prefer tweezing, but please DO NOT shave your eyebrows. Ew.
If you decide to go the “do-it-yourself” route by tweezing, follow these easy steps to creating a great brow shape for your face!
1. Start noticing which type of brows you like. Looking through magazines, and watching celebrities are excellent ways to get references for your own eyebrows. Check out my list of Best Celebrity Eyebrows here for some great examples.
2. To start the shaping process you will need a brow comb, or spoolie, and a good pair of tweezers. Comb your brows to lay all the hair in one direction and smooth it out. If you have never shaped your eyebrows before, they might be a little out of control (I know mine were!), so this step is important.
3. Next, you need to determine where they start, where they end and where your arch should be. Take a look at the Megan Fox picture above. Line “A” shows you where your eyebrow should start. Take a pencil, or anything with a straight edge and align it straight from the corner of your nose up to your eyebrow. Wherever the pencil hits your brow is an indicator of where you eyebrow needs to start. However: Notice Megan’s eyebrow does not start where the line ends. Her eyes are more wide-set, so she can get away with having her eyebrows start closer it, and it even makes her eyes look closer together. Remember, beauty tips are not set in stone, if you feel that something may not look right on you, alter it!
4. Now, it’s time to see where you should place your arch. Take the same pencil and look straight ahead in a mirror. Align the pencil diagonally so that it starts at the corner of your nose, and skims the outside of your iris (not literally!). See Line “B” on Megan’s face. This is where your arch should be. When creating your arch, make sure you keep in mind what type of brow you are going for. Making too much of an extreme arch will make you look constantly mad or surprised.
5. To find out where your brow should end, take your pencil, start at the corner of your nose and place it diagonal, this time skimming the very outside corner of your eye. See Line “C.”
6. Now that you’ve got your dimensions down, it is time to start plucking! Hold your tweezers at a 45 degree angle and go to town. A good tip is to take a white eyeliner pencil (wet and wild makes a really cheap one, 99 cents), and trace an outline of how you want your brow to look. Then, whatever you do, do not pluck inside the white lines! If you want to forget the white pencil, start plucking random strays, making your way up to the brow. Go slow, and pull one by one. You might need to step back half way through and see how it looks from other angles. Don’t forget your uni-brow, if you have one!
Tip: DO NOT GET TOO CRAZY WITH IT! lol. The first time I held a pair of tweezers, I plucked my intense catapillar eyebrows into skinny, barely there worms. I thought it looked amazing at the time, but I was 10. Now, I’m still regretting that day because my eyebrows have taken years to grow back, and they still have much more work to do.
Some Things to Remember:
- If you have naturally thick, unruly eyebrows, it’s probably best to keep them full. If you make them too thin, you will have a hell of a time keeping up with it.
- If you’re new to tweezing, slanted tip tweezers will probably work best. You have more control and lessen the risk of pinching yourself.
- There is a myth out there that you shouldn’t pluck above your eyebrow. This is not true. Plucking above is as important as plucking below, if you need it.
- Make sure you have enough light!
- Do not overpluck!!
